What Standard is The Standard?

WCAG, ADA, SEC. 508, What does this all mean? Understanding these terms is essential in both understanding accessibility and in protecting yourself against accessibility lawsuits and demand letters.

WCAG (Web content Accessibility Guidelines)

WCAG created by W3C an internationally acknowledged guideline of how to create an accessible website. Although WCAG is the most commonly accepted standard, it is not a government official standard.

ADA (American Disabilties Act)

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law in 1990. The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. The ADA does not create web standards but the ADA has been interpreted by the supreme court to apply to websites.

SECTION 508 (Government wide IT-accessibility program)

Section 508 requires that the federal government procure, create, use and maintain IT platforms that are accessible to people with disabilities, regardless of whether or not they work for the federal government.
